Dr. Deborah K. Witt, MD, is an Assistant Professor, Director of Diversity Leadership Program/URM Recruitment Coordinator, and past Director of Jefferson’s Jackson Scholars Program, a HRSA sponsored program providing mentorship and curricular support for minority medical students interested in family medicine in the Department of Family & Community Medicine at Jefferson Medical College. Dr. Witt graduated from Hahnemann University School of Medicine in 1993, and then completed her residency in Family Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Subsequently, she completed a Fellowship in Faculty Development at Jefferson. She has been
selected as a Minority Faculty Scholar to research health disparities and emphasize how cultural competency can assist in elimination of health disparities among the health care services. She is an avid clinician, teacher and supporter of educating our communities about health issues and preparing residents and medical students to provide culturally sensitive, quality health care.
She is actively involved in community services and speaks on various topics such as “Why Abstinence”, “Menopause and You”, “Men’s Health”, “Screening and Prevention Throughout a Woman’s Life”. She has developed a 14-week course for the Sharon Baptist Bible Institute entitled, “Healthy Kingdom Living”, and serves as the Servant Leader in the Health & Wellness Ministry, within her community church. As a leader in faith-based health care initiatives locally, she has broadened her service internationally with Glory Unlimited Evangelistic Ministries Int’l, as the CFO and Medical Director, providing medical care services to families among impoverished areas of Montego Bay, Jamaica and plans to extend services in Acapulco, Mexico, in the future. Her service most recently expanded to offering an International Medical Missions elective to medical residents and students to learn from serving in international communities. Also in June 2008 she was issued her permanent registration as a medical practitioner licensed by the Medical Council of Jamaica.
Dr. Witt is on the Board of Directors for the National Society of Teachers of Family Medicine as Senior Member-at-Large, is the American Heart Association’s Affiliate’s Board of Director’s President, and member of the BOD for Physicians for Social Responsibility. In addition she is a volunteer for different organizations such as the American Diabetes Association and the American Cancer Society. She also was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society, Alpha Chapter of Pennsylvania at Jefferson Medical College, one of 2 Jefferson Faculty so honored for her achievements in scholarship, medical education, research, and community service. Other awards include being recognized by the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM), as one of the discipline’s outstanding junior faculty members in 1999, by Thomas Jefferson University as a STAR employee, past scholarship recipient from the Association of Black Women Physicians, and past recipient of SNMA’s National Service Award in honor of outstanding commitment and dedication and service.
