INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL MISSIONS ELECTIVE SUMMARY
The International Medical Missions Elective
It's a quarterly intense 1- week program offered to 2ND and 3rd year Family Medicine Residents and 4th year medical students interested in exploring the area of International /Global Health, based in Montego Bay, Jamaica, West Indies.
This experience is a great opportunity for residents and student to provide quality care for an undeserved 3rd world population.
Research shows:
- That those residents and students who have exposure to international medicine early in their training have an effect on impacting their career emphasis for the future.
- These emerging health care professionals gain a valuable perspective of practicing medicine with limited resources, recognizing the true “Art of Medicine”.
Deborah K. Witt, MD from the Department of Family & Community Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA, has been volunteering in this community over the past 8 years. She has developed a longitudinal relationship with the Ministry of Health of Jamaica along with their community leaders to culminate in the development of an action packed experience for the learners.
The elective consists of:
--Free clinics, which includes free 4-month supply of essential medications, for the most impoverished communities of Montego Bay
--Medical rounds at the regional hospital; homeless/youth shelter care, home visits and nursing home visits.
Dr. Witt’s passion to expose the trainees in a non-traditional setting also includes key factors such as collaborating with different cultures/healthcare systems, as well as enhancing their clinical skills while impacting those they serve, by meeting a need.
As more residents, students and even faculty participate in the elective, the impact on the community is even greater, as more patients are accommodated.
